| About my research / 研究について I (Takehiko Yoshida) am a researcher specializing in environmental philosophy/media theory. You may not have heard of the field of "environmental philosophy". There are various definitions. In my case, under the principle of "I CAN'T EXIST WITHOUT THE OTHERS", I am thinking about who we are and what is the field where we live. Specifically, my research consists of three pillars: "the Other" "Ontology" and "Media theory". First, "the Other". In my research, the others include not only humans, but all living things, nonliving things, entire ecosystems, memories, history and concepts. In short, the others means all the events and things that are already lost, all the events and things that don't yet exist. So what are the principles that connect I and the others? This is my question in "the Other". Secondly, "Ontology". The thesis "I CAN'T EXIST WITHOUT THE OTHERS" does not simply state that a person cannot live alone. It is literally the HORRIBLE fact that the others are always ahead of me and I cannot exist without them. If so, there should be a fundamental responsibility to the others (So I think of "Ontology" and "Ethics" as the same thing). So what are the structures and principles of responsibility? This is my question in "Ontology". Thirdly, "Media theory". The modern society we live in is formed by technology that evolves at a tremendous speed. And I see almost every technology as a media technology. So the change of the media which connect I and the others change my existence. Then, what exactly does that change mean? This is my question in "Media theory". Thus, I think of environmental philosophy as an integration of "the Other", "Ontology", and "Media theory". Through the environmental philosophy, I am exploring the enormous sum of the relationship between I and the others, the principle that the whole structure changes by the technology, and the responsibilities and ethics created within it. When you hear about environmental philosophy, you may think about nature conservation, ecology and environmental ethics. However, I think it is easier to convey my research if you imagine "all that is around" in which the environment originally means. I am currently interested in media art, bioart and artificial life. 私（吉田健彦）は、環境哲学／メディア論を専門としている研究者です。 環境哲学とは、まだあまり耳にすることのない分野だと思います。その定義は様々にあるでしょうが、私の場合は、「この私というものは他者なくしては存在し得ない」というテーゼを出発点として、私たちの生きている場について研究をしています。 （私も客員研究員として所属している大阪府立大学の「環境哲学・人間学研究所」では、環境哲学を このように 分かりやすくまとめています。） 私の研究は、具体的には「他者論」、「存在論」、「メディア論」の三つを柱として構成されます。 第一に「他者論」。私の研究において、他者とは、人間だけではなくあらゆる生物、非生物や生態系全体、さらには記憶や歴史、概念をも含めたものです。要するに他者とは、既に無いこと／もの、未だ無いこと／ものをひっくるめたものなのです。では、そのような他者たちとこの私を繋ぐ原理とは、どのようなものでしょうか？ これが「他者論」における私の問いです。 第二に「存在論」。「この私というものは他者なくしては存在し得ない」というテーゼは、単に人は独りでは生きていけない的なことを述べているのではなく、まさに字義通り、他者こそがこの私に常に既に先行しているのであり、それなしには私は存在し得ないという恐るべき事実を示しています。そうであれば、そこには他者に対する根源的な責任があるはずです（つまり私は、存在論と倫理を直接的にイコールで考えています）。その責任の構造と原理はどのようなものでしょうか？ これが「存在論」における私の問いです。 第三に「メディア論」。私たちが生きている現代社会は、凄まじい速度で進化していく技術によって成立しています。そして私は、ほぼすべての技術をメディア技術として捉えています。この私とすべての他者を繋ぐものがメディアであるのなら、その凄まじい変化は直接この私の存在そのものを変容させるでしょう。ではその変容とはどのようなものなのでしょうか？ これが「メディア論」における私の問いです。 このように、私は、「他者論」「存在論」「メディア論」といった枠組みを統合しつつ、そのなかで現れてくる他者とこの私というものの関係の巨大な総体、その総体が技術によって変容していく原理、そしてそのなかで生みだされる責任／倫理について探求することを、環境哲学と呼んでいます。環境哲学と聞くと、自然保護やエコロジー、環境倫理などを思い浮かべられるかもしれませんが、環境が本来意味する「まわりに在るあらゆるものごと」をイメージしてもらうと、伝わりやすいと思います。 現在は、改めてメディアアートやバイオアート、そして人工生命などについて関心を持ちつつ研究を進めています。 |
